Resume Guidelines

There is a science to resume writing and we are experts. A typical hiring manager spends only 60 seconds reading a resume (no joke). Thus, your resume needs to be concise, skim-able, and easy to read. We have clear rules and guidelines for our resume writers in order to ensure quality.

These guidelines include:

  • Only producing 1 page resumes
  • Utilizing Times New Roman or Calibri font because it has been shown in scientific studies to be the most legible font for most people
  • Using 11 or 12 point font
  • Studies have shown people don’t read paragraphs but they do read bullet points. Hence, our resumes incorporate bullet points instead of paragraphs.
  • The name of the company, your position, and job description is more important than your dates of employment. Consequently, our resumes focus on the former by putting them on the left side of the resume, bolded, in bullets, or italicized for emphasis.
  • We divide our resumes into sections separated by lines to ensure that the hiring manager can easily find important information.
  • All final versions resumes are reviewed by 2 resume writers before being sent out for quality control purposes.
  • We do not include more than 4 jobs or 7 years of work experience on a resume (it makes the client look like he or she jumps from one job to another) unless it is absolutely essential.
  • Do not include high school education on resume unless you are under 20 years old and have not attended college

This is the worst job market in recent memory and our clients expect us to give them a competitive edge with a great resume.

Vijay Ingam, the founder of SOS Career Service, gives Resume Workshops to organizations in California. Resume Workshops are designed to ensure that participants are prepared for the difficult job market. Frequently Asked Questions

How long should a resume be?

We recommend that your resume be no longer than 1 page. Research indicates that the typical hiring manager takes about sixty seconds reading a resume before deciding whether or not to interview an applicant. Longer resumes are difficult to skim and are generally less effective at getting your hired.

Should I tell the hiring manager that I hired a resume writer, job interview coach, or career counselor?

Professional interview coaching, resume writing, and career counseling are your secret weapon. You shouldn’t mention in your interview (or to anyone at the company) that you hired a professional. If they specifically ask you, you can mention you “got help,” but don’t say much. You want your future employer to think that you’re just a very articulate and well-prepared person who wrote a great resume for themselves.

Do I really need a cover letter?

Studies have shown that about 35% of companies will discard a resume that does not include a cover letter and 85% of companies prefer resumes with cover letters. Job applicants who send out a cover letter with their resume, generally get a job 2 or 3 weeks faster and have a higher success rate in getting a job. Your cover letter is important for the success of your job search and we strongly suggest you have one.

Do I really need a thank you letter?

It is standard procedure in business to send a thank you not after an interview. Scientific studies have shown that sending a thank you letter improves your chances of getting a job offer by 3%. Hiring managers are busy people who are remarkably forgetful. The day after an interview, they may not remember what you said, but they will remember that you sent a thank you letter expressing interest in the position. The fact that you sent a thank you letter will help your application.
