Frequently Asked Questions

How long should a resume be?

We recommend that your resume be no longer than 1 page. Research indicates that the typical hiring manager takes about sixty seconds reading a resume before deciding whether or not to interview an applicant. Longer resumes are difficult to skim and are generally less effective at getting you hired.

Should I tell the hiring manager that I hired a resume writer, job interview coach, or career counselor?

Professional interview coaching, resume writing, and career counseling are your secret weapon. You shouldn’t mention in your interview (or to anyone at the company) that you hired a professional. If they specifically ask you, you can mention you “got help” but don’t elaborate. You want your future employer to think that you’re just a very articulate and well-prepared person who wrote a great resume for themselves.

Do I really need a cover letter?

Studies have shown that about 35% of companies will discard a resume that does not include a cover letter and 85% of companies prefer resumes with cover letters. Job applicants who send out a cover letter with their resume generally get a job 2 or 3 weeks faster and have a higher success rate in getting a job. Your cover letter is important for the success of your job search and we strongly suggest you have one.

Do I really need a thank you letter?

It is standard procedure in business to send a thank you note after an interview. Scientific studies have shown that sending a thank you letter improves your chances of getting a job offer by 3%. Hiring managers are busy people who are remarkably forgetful. The day after an interview, they may not remember what you said, but they will remember that you sent a thank you letter expressing interest in the position. The fact that you sent a thank you letter will help your application.

Multiple Mini Interview is a relatively new interview technique frequently used in medical school admissions and investment banking. The technique was pioneered at McMaster University but is now used at other schools and businesses. This interview style uses many short independent assessments, normally in a timed circuit, to get an aggregate score of each candidate’s soft skills.
